Summary

In Balochistan, the non-availability of water for large-scale crop production is the main constraint for sustained agriculture. Livestock rearing and agriculture are the main sources of income for the local population. Water, the most sought-after natural resource in the province, remains a dwindling resource. The majority of the rural population is poor with deteriorating living conditions because of continuously imposed pressure for survival, resulting in the degradation of agricultural and range lands. The sequential dry spells and flash floods have further exacerbated the situation for rural communities.

Natural Resource Management is a cross-cutting theme in BRSP’s programmes that endeavors to explore new venues for enhancing local livelihood opportunities by engaging small farmers, water shareholders, livestock farmers, landowners, etc. BRSP has carried out several integrated water management projects across Balochistan that have increased agricultural productivity, enhanced livestock output, and fulfilled the drinking requirements of the rural poor. BRSP focuses mainly on two areas in NRM, i.e., improving water conservation and recharge structures and improving water management.
